NorthEast     Oklahoma    Scrollers

 Volume 40        June 2006

The next meeting of the NorthEast Oklahoma Scrollers will be at 7pm June 1st in Jim Stott's shop.

The June meeting is one of our quarterly snack and raffle nights so don't forget to bring something to munch on and if possible something for the raffle, preferably something wood related.

We had 16 members at the May meeting.  A lot of business was conducted and we are making progress in getting ready for the Wonderful World of Wood on July 7 and 8.

Sallie is still looking for booth workers for both days so if you would like FREE admittance to the show let Sallie know at the June meeting and she will schedule you for one of the slots.

We also need items for display at the club table so if you have something you would like to show off please either bring it to the next meeting and give it to me or if you are working the booth bring it with you to the show. The building is locked down at night with a guard present so security is good.

Roger Hogg attended the Parent Child Center thank you banquet as the club representative. He stated that they were very grateful for the Christmas toys we donated. He also asked about girl toys and was told that girls like cars also so any and all toys that you want to make will be appreciated.

While we are on the subject of the WWoW show. Jim Stott’s neighbor is going to letter our table cover. It was voted on to do the lettering in red so it has more visibility. It will be done and given to us at the June meeting. The cost is $75.00 so be prepared to buy lots of raffle tickets.

Judy Campbell presented a program on how she cuts wood portraits. She gave a great lecture on how she prepares her wood to fit her frames (she buys hers), how to cut the subject, and how to mount the finished piece in the frame.  One thing she and Ed John brought up. If you are making items for sale sign them but do not date them unless you are having an immediate sale. They both said that if you are selling in a booth customers tended to skip buying old works, so leave the date off.

SHOW AND TELL

Sallie Crawford brought a stick and ball game that can easily be made and would make a good addition to our Christmas toy collection. The plan for it is in this newsletter.

Judy Campbell showed an elephant plaque she did in tupelo wood. It was extremely light and for those of us that have never used it it is extremely soft, almost like bass wood. Carvers love it.

Shirley Flint had a cross with dove candle holder and 3 bowls she turned. Please do like she has and don’t limit your items for show and tell to just scroll sawed items, we like to see all your work.

Ed John’s contribution was a wall clock made of mahogany with a snauzer dog overlay cut out of Baltic birch, and a wall plaque of a bear in the wilderness made out of a diagonally cut walnut branch with bark still attached.

Irv McGuire showed us a pair of musical spoons he cut and carved out of maple. He also told us that Doris won’t let him play them in the house.

Chuck Mehm presented a ½ scale rocking horse. It was made off the “Wildflower” pattern and will be used by the carvers as the raffle prize at the Wonderful World of Wood show.

Jim Stotts showed off one of his crazy clocks. Actually he showed two of them, one in progress and one finished with pendulum and insert installed.

Paul Turay brought a sun catcher. It was a fairy cut out of clear plexiglass. He said the directions for cutting the plastic said to sandwich the material between two sheets of plywood but when he did it that way it tried to weld itself to the wood. He finally just cut it by itself and the only recommendation he would make was to use a coarse blade to clear the chips. Be sure to leave the plastic film on the plexiglass until after you finish working it.

THE PREZ SEZ or SALLIE’S SOLITARY SAYINGS

“Hi ya’ll

As you can tell from the preceding paragraphs, we had a great Show & Tell at the last meting. Keep up the good work everyone!

I just returned from a Green Country Woodworkers meeting and they’re getting worried about the number of toys they’ve made. They are afraid that their efforts have been too small. I know that we can win if we do as well as last year, but I think we are going to do even better. Just keep on making those toys of all kinds.

Keep making plans to attend the Wonderful World of Wood, July 7 & 8, and to drive to Branson for the 14th & 15th.

See ya’ at the meeting

Sallie

FOR THE FUTURE

Next meeting would you bring a copy of a pattern that can be used for the Christmas project? It doesn’t have to be a perfect pattern, a sketch will do, just as long as there is enough information there that I can redraw or explain what we are making.

I think it would be a good idea if we started keeping the various plans we have developed in a loose-leaf notebook where a member can go through it and find some toy he or she wants to make.

A tradition the Branson group has started that seems to have really caught on is their yearly “theme” contest. Last year they had used a lion as their theme and challenged their members to come up with a scrolled lion of some sort. This year “the moose on the loose” was their theme and every one had to come up with their variation. They are to be displayed on the club table at the “picnic” in July.

Sallie brought it up at the last meeting that this might be something we would enjoy doing and I agree. Judy Campbell, who is a member of both groups, has participated in the theme contest so we need to pick her brain. Please think about it and bring some ideas for the theme to the next meeting.

Well, that is it for another month. I hope to see all of you June 1st. Don’t forget to bring your goodies and raffle items.

Try not to get waterlogged or blown away.

I almost forgot. July is the start of our (the club’s) year and once again you are about to be asked for money. As usual the dues are $12.00. If you are paying by check be sure to make it out either to Cora or me. The club does not have an account and it is too hard to deposit if it isn’t in one of our names.
