NorthEast Oklahoma Scroller Activities
Workshops
Once a year, we gather on a Saturday in November to complete our toy project for underpriviledged and dislocated children. In 2005 the Green Country Woodworkers discovered that we make toys just like they have for years. Last year we had an official challenge. If we made the most toys, they would have to serve our food at our joint Christmas dinner in December. We beat them unofficially in 2005 and were confident we would win in 2006. Either way, thousands of children will have a better Christmas than they would have had otherwise.
Woodshows
The weekend following the Fourth of July is always the Wonderful World of Wood. We have our own booth where we raffle member made items, show what we have done, and have a hands on demonstration of what we can do.
In 2006, for the first time the club will actively participate in the Scrollsaw Celebration in Branson, Arkansas.
Programs
Our meetings are very informal affairs. If someone has something to share, we encourage it. We also have scheduled programs put on by members and non-members. In the past, these have included intarsia, hints/tricks, dust removal/collection, portrait making, and castle building.
During one 3-month period, every member of the club made a clock from the same pattern. This was preparation for a large club project of making a 3' tall clock (to be determined) and carrying case for display at events in which we participate.
Projects
Throughout the year, members of the club have the opportunity to make toy cars out of scrap wood to donate to the club. Bring the car bodies to a meeting, and in November we will get together to put wheels on the cars. You also can do some puzzles and other miscellaneous projects- pretty much anything for a kid! At the end of the year, the toys are donated to groups such as the little lighthouse and salvation army. This is a great way to give a little to your community, and give those children joy.
Workshops
Once a year we have a Santa's Workshop on a Saturday in November. Here we put wheels (provided by the club) on the cars made by members during the year. In addition to cars, we count and box up all the other kinds of toys. Then we allocate the boxes to groups chosen by members.
